Alabama Port Authority Awards Contract for New Cranes at Montgomery Intermodal Facility

Montgomery, AL – September 25, 2025 – The Alabama Port Authority announced this week its contract with Konecranes for the delivery of two rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes, which will serve as the backbone for container handling at the Montgomery Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF).

This milestone marks significant progress toward opening the terminal and serving customers in early 2027. Construction is underway on the project, which broke ground in February 2025.

The Montgomery ICTF, developed in partnership with CSX, will expand the Port of Mobile’s reach into central Alabama, offering seamless rail and truck connections to global markets. The nearly $100 million project is funded primarily through federal appropriations secured by former Senator Richard Shelby.  Since the project was first announced in 2022, more than $8 billion in private economic development investment has been announced in the surrounding area.

“These new cranes represent an exciting step forward in bringing the Montgomery facility online,” said Doug Otto, Interim Director and CEO of the Alabama Port Authority. “Konecranes has a proven track record at our Port, and their technology will ensure that our intermodal customers benefit from efficient, safe, and reliable operations. This investment positions the facility to meet growing demand and strengthens Alabama’s competitive advantage in global trade.”

The Konecranes RTGs will feature smart technologies to enhance safety, accuracy, and yard efficiency, helping to streamline container transfers between rail and truck. Their delivery, scheduled for late 2026, keeps the project on track for operational launch in 2027.

“We are honored to support the Alabama Port Authority on this important project. Our RTGs are designed to deliver the reliability, safety, and efficiency needed for a modern intermodal operation,” said Alan Garcia, Director, Regional Sales Americas, Konecranes, Port Solutions. ‘Supplying this equipment for the Montgomery facility reflects our shared commitment to helping the Port expand its capabilities and strengthen Alabama’s role in global logistics.”

“The Montgomery ICTF is a transformational project for our state,” Otto added. “With the addition of these RTGs, we are one step closer to opening a facility that will provide faster freight movement, support job growth, and expand economic opportunities across Alabama.”
